Early Introduction of Peanuts May Prevent Allergies

OPDT/OAC — 2025-02-20

Early Introduction of Peanuts May Prevent Allergies

Did you know? Previously, pregnant and breastfeeding women were told to avoid peanuts to prevent allergies in their children.

Studies show a strong link between early peanut exposure and lower food allergy risk. In the studies, peanuts were introduced to high-risk babies and children from 4 months to 3 years old. By doing so, their food allergy risk was reduced by up to 80%.

A US study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health found that regular consumption of peanut products from infancy to age five reduced the rate of peanut allergy in adolescence by 71%. If your baby has severe eczema or an egg allergy, consult your paediatrician to determine the appropriate timing and method for introducing peanuts into your infant's diet.
