OAC/OPDT Post Graduate Scholarship
Objective of the scholarship
The objective of the scholarship is to provide an opportunity for deserving candidates to obtain a M-degree which will enable them to contribute to high quality scientific research in oilseeds. In this instance the subject of study must fall within the broad framework of the objectives of the OAC/OPDT. Scholarships for a D-degree will also be considered if the subject of the study is deemed of a high priority by the OAC/OPDT.
Requirements
The scholarship is open to citizens of the Republic of South Africa, who have qualified for admission to a Masters or Doctors degree at a recognised tertiary institution.
Evaluation
The scholarship is awarded on merit and in the case of a D-degree also according to the requirements of the OAC/OPDT's for a specific study.
Value of and number of scholarships
The value of the scholarship will vary according to the extent of the study. For a Masters Degree the guideline is 2 years and for a Doctorate 3 years. The value of the scholarship is currently R70 000 per annum. This amount is paid directly to the candidate following the receipt of sufficient proof that the candidate has been accepted and registered at the University for the year in question. The allocation of a scholarship is not regarded as a guarantee that the allocation will be repeated in successive years. Scholarship allocations for successive years will be paid upon receipt of documentation from the academic leader that satisfactory progress was made during the previous academic year as well as proof of registration for the next year by the candidate.
Obligations
The successful candidate must conduct an approved research project under the leadership of a recognised study leader at the university concerned. The project may be used as a partial requirement for a post graduate qualification. A formal contract must be signed by both parties.
Progress reports
The incumbent of the scholarship is requested, in addition to the normal progress reports by the academic leader, to also submit a final report (thesis) on completion of the research.
Selection of candidates
Selection takes place at the universities and candidates which have applied for the first time, should be listed in priority sequence. Applications of selected candidates are submitted by the universities and will be considered by the OAC/OPDT during October. Selected candidates may, for the OAC/OPDT's account, be requested to attend a personal interview. The results of the OAC/OPDT will be made known directly after the meeting (30 November).
Closing date
Completed applications must reach the OAC/OPDT by 30 September 2024.
